One of the reasons for the shortage is the lockdown imposed in hundreds of districts across the country due to coronavirus outbreak. This has resulted in the shutting down of mandis and wholesale markets, sources said in a report. The unseasonal rains too have affected the process of procurement of wheat, they said. The report says that Roller Flour Millers Federation has written to the Food Corporate of India (FCI) explaining the present situation in detail. It has also appealed to the FCI to let general managers at all regional offices the authority to sell the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS(D)) wheat directly to the mills in this crisis situation.
